Hygge: Denmark’s Secret to Happiness and Warmth

Hygge (pronounced "hoo-gah") is a big part of Danish culture. It is a lifestyle centered around warmth, togetherness, and simple pleasures. Whether enjoying a hot chocolate on a cold evening, having a comfy movie night with some friends, or having a relaxing candlelit bath, Hygge can help create a life filled with warmth, comfort, and connection.

I have experienced Hygee in various ways, and without even realizing it.

1. Cozy Cafes and Coffee Culture

I wondered why there were so many cafes in Copenhagen. Like, who drinks that much coffee in a day? But once I started to explore some of these cafes, I realized it wasn't the coffee at all; it was the cafe culture people are drawn to.

Spending time in a cozy, candle-lit cafe on a cold day, peacefully working on assignments, and chatting with friends with a warm drink are part of the Hygee cafe culture. I love the emphasis on self-enjoyment and self-care without rush.

2. Slow Sunday Mornings and Rainy Days

There is something magical about a slow Sunday morning when the city is quiet or when it's raining, and the water droplets hit my balcony floor.

A Sunday sleep-in with no agenda and staying inside on a gray, rainy day with a blanket and my laptop open to Netflix allows me to embrace stillness and focus on myself.

I cannot count how many Sundays I have spent rotting in bed for a little longer and going to the gym for some me time. It's essential to take some time for yourself and recharge.

3. Baking Brownies with Friends

To unwind from a stressful week and celebrate a Galentines, my friends and I baked some delicious
brownies in our communal kitchen.

The scent of rich cocoa and laughter echoed over the sound of whisking batter. It was cold and snowy outside, but inside, it was all warm and joyful. We got some vanilla ice cream to create the perfect dessert and curled up with our ice cream brownies on the couch to watch the 2015 live remake of Cinderella with Lilly James.

It was proof that sometimes the simplest moments with good friends are the most hyggelig (hygee) of all.

Modern Society is a threat to Hygee

Modern life challenges this cherished tradition. The fast-paced nature of work culture, digital distractions, and globalization have made it harder for people to slow down and embrace Hygee. As we spend more times on screens, Hygee risks turning into just another lifestyle trend rather than a lived experience.

How Can you Incorporate Hygee into Your Life

- Create a warm and inviting space with soft blankets, candles.

- Disconnect from technology for a few hours and enjoy a book or go for a walk.

- Spend quality time with loved ones through game nights, shared meals.

- Embrace simple pleasure like baking, crafting, sipping a warm drink on a cold day and the glow of the morning sun.
